In 1877, the year in which this work was carried out, Rops wrote the following about it: "(...) this thingummyjig here (...) is, I believe, the most important thing that I have done (...)"

L'Attrapade was exhibited during his lifetime, along with The Temptation of Saint Anthony, at the first annual exhibition of "Independent Art", held at the Palais de l'Industrie in Antwerp, in March 1887.
